Marylhurst University is currently seeking Adjunct Faculty with terminal degrees in a field relevant to the M. S. in Food Systems and Society degree program to teach online courses such as Food and Culture, Engagement for Social Change, Food Politics, and Food Systems Theory. This pool will be used to fill specific department needs on a term-by-term basis for academic year 2017-2018. Current Marylhurst University adjunct faculty are not required to apply.

JOB TITLE: Adjunct Faculty

REPORTS TO: Department Chair

The Master of Science in Food Systems and Society (FSS) program is hiring one or more experienced adjunct faculty to teach online courses related to food systems, social justice, culture, and food system engagement in Winter and Spring Quarters 2017-18. The program and its courses focus on critical analysis, engaged scholarship, and equity and social change in the food system. 

The faculty member in this position will be responsible for developing and revising online, graduate courses to meet program objectives and needs; teaching online through our learning management system, Canvas; developing and managing course materials; facilitating online discussions; and providing constructive feedback and evaluation of student work according to graduate-level writing standards using Chicago writing and citation style. Understanding of online pedagogy and teaching practices is strongly preferred; expertise in food systems and society is required.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:  Teaching is the primary responsibility for all faculty at Marylhurst University and includes time spent in the classroom, lab, or on-line courses, course preparation, maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught, conferring with students, providing timely response and follow-through.  Our faculty challenge students intellectually, inspire personal and professional growth, and encourage students to develop critical thinking skills that will provide them the capacity to think and act in the world and serve them long after they graduate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The essential duties and responsibilities of an adjunct faculty member are those duties and responsibilities that are necessary to excellent instruction.  They include the following:

  1. Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned courses using the syllabus as a guide;
  2. Prepare syllabus, all course materials, lectures, labs, and presentations;  complete follow-through on the course including course development; course revisions; class preparation; timely review, prompt feedback  and grading of student submissions; and student letters of recommendation;
  3. Submission of the course syllabus on time (by the first day of registration);
  4. Evaluate artistic presentations, and supervise or teach clinical internships or programs when applicable;
  5. Submit textbook orders and return books to the department program coordinator by the established deadline;
  6. Coordinate, plan and prepare for delivering courses in the day, evening, or on weekends on any Marylhurst University affiliated campus as assigned, according to approved course syllabus, plan each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class minute meaningful; incorporate instructional technologies in delivery, maximizing the learning opportunities for each student;
  7. Verify all students attending the class have registered with the university and if not promptly inform the advising department;
  8. Keep students informed concerning course content, requirements, and their progress through the prompt grading of papers and other work which includes participation, grading exams or assignments to allow prompt feedback to students;
  9. Ensure timely response to all student communications;
  10. Maintain accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records in accordance with FERPA regulations and submit grades and records by established university deadlines;
  11. Follow Office of the Registrar's protocols for posting grades. If a student receives an incomplete grade, the remaining work must be evaluated in the subsequent term including submission of the final grade;
  12. Maintain a connection to the faculty member's discipline and stay active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught;
  13. Apply new knowledge in the faculty member's discipline to instruction;
  14. Stimulate enthusiasm for the subjects taught;
  15. Ensure that each program/class contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains currency; be informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities;
  16. Promptly notify advising center of a student who is at risk, failing to attend class or not completing academic work;
  17. Make use of available university online resources (program web page, Marylhurst G-mail, office hour posting, syllabi posting, grade book, daily updated voice mail message and 24 hour return call policy);
  18. Become thoroughly familiar with all university policies and procedures and comply with all university policies and procedures and strive for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the university;
  19. Submit required reports to the appropriate university personnel in a timely manner;
  20. Work with other faculty and administrators in developing program curriculum, standards, and policies, including reviewing and participating in textbook selection process where appropriate;
  21. Provide; course books if not supplied; and course supplies and copies purchased off campus;
  22. Include students as appropriate in the creation of knowledge;
  23. Mentor students as follows:
    1. Support students as they identify areas of academic and professional aspiration;
    2. Demonstrate a genuine concern for each student through personal conferences and the full use of the faculty advisement system;
    3. Follow the students of concern protocol as needed;
    4. Assist students with need for accommodation through cooperation with director of enrollment services.

Teaching duties and responsibilities may be reassigned at the discretion of the department chair with the approval of the provost.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  1. Terminal degree in a related field.
  2. Teaching experience in higher education.
  3. Experience in online, hybrid pedagogy preferred.
